Newcomers and veterans earn Globe noms
The Golden Globe nominations for the 2010 awards were revealed yesterday, and the score category was a mix of surprises and “usual suspects”. Veterans James Horner and Marvin Hamlisch were nominated for Avatar and The Informant respectively, fan favorite Michael Giacchino for Up and newcomer Abel Korzeniowski for A Single Man (Korzeniowski only just had his big break in the business with the big orchestral score for animated feature Battle for Terra). Also nominated are Karen O. and Carter Burwell for Where the Wild Things Are.
Among award “regulars,” Randy Newman (The Princess and the Frog), Alexandre Desplat (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) and Thomas Newman (Brothers) did not receive any nomination. In the song category, Brothers is represented by U2:s song “Winter”. In this category, James Horner’s song “I See You” from Avatar was also nominated, together with Maury Yeston’s “Cinema Italiano” from Nine, Paul McCartney’s “I Want to Come Home” from Everybody’s Fine and “The Weary Kind” (Theme from Crazy Heart) by Ryan Bingham and T. Bone Burnett.
In related news, Burnett and Stephen Bruton were honoured by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association when they announced their winners of the 2009 awards on December 13. Burnett and Bruton won the “Best Music Score” category for Crazy Heart, with Alexandre Desplat’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox as runner-up.
