Brian Eno and others not eligible for Oscar

Jan 5 2010

A number of critically acclaimed composers will not be a part of the Oscar race this year, The Wrap reports. Brian Eno, who recently scored Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, is not eligible simply due to the reason that the composer never was submitted to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration. According to the Warp article by Steve Pond, Eno “simply felt that he didn’t have time to submit the required paperwork and submit to the type of publicity campaign necessary” to run for an Oscar nomination.

Other scores that have been judged ineligible by the academy’s music branch are Carter Burwell’s and Karen O.’s Where the Wild Things Are and T. Bone Burnett’s and Stephen Bruton’s Crazy Heart, both of them early critics favourites. They most likely became “victims” of  the rule stipulating that “scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other preexisting music, diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs, or assembled from the music of more than one composer shall not be eligible”.

More of a mystery is the disqualification of Nicholas Hooper’s score for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Carter Burwell’s The Blind Side. None of those are on the surprisingly short list of eligible scores for the 2010 Oscars. Other major scores excluded are Hans Zimmer’s Angels and Demons, Marco Beltrami’s Knowing and Law Abiding Citizen by Brian Tyler.
